Elizabeth PRIOR (1842-1881)

Elizabeth PRIOR was born on 8th October 1842 at Addington, Surrey and baptized at the church on 6th November 1842. She was the daughter of William and Alice PRIOR.

Elizabeth married Jesse HOWICK of Burstow, Surrey, the son of John and Sarah HOWICK.  They had the following known children:

  • Alice HOWICK, b. 8th December 1870 at Sanderstead
  • Jesse HOWICK, b. About 1873

In 1871 Jesse and Elizabeth were living in Outwood with the young Alice as Table 20 shows.

Both Elizabeth and Alice appear on the 1881 census at William and Alice PRIOR's house (see Table 4). Elizabeth was probably very ill at this time as she died on 21st April 1881, aged 38, at her mother's house. Cause of death is recorded as 'Catarrh Scrofula 20 years'.

Jesse HOWICK Snr is recorded in the 1881 census separately, with his mother and son (who both appear twice in the 1881 census) as Table 10 shows.

Jesse went on to marry Emily Jane BANKS nee DANIELS (b. abt 1842 in Horne, Surrey) in 1882 and they had the following known children:

  • Percival HOWICK, b. about 1883 at Burstow
  • Florence HOWICK. b. abt 1884 at Burstow

In 1891 Jesse and Emily were living in Coulsdon as Table 21 shows.

By 1901 the family had moved to Brighton Road in Reigate as Table 22 shows.

Emily died in 1913 and was buried in Reigate Cemetery. Jesse followed in 1923. The headstone has the following inscription:

In loving memory of EMILY JANE the beloved wife of JESSE HOWICK died April 21st 1913 aged 70 years. Peace Perfect Peace.

Also of JESSE HOWICK husband of the above died Sept 25th 1923 aged 74 years. At rest.

On the reverse of the headstone is an additional inscription recording the death of Emily's daughter from her first marriage:

In loving memory of Edith Emily Banks died December 20th 1945 aged 68 years, daughter of Emily Jane Howick
