THE PRIOR FAMILY OF CROYDON AND ADDINGTON

Chapter 100

John KING (1856)

John King was born on 1st June 1856 at Charlwood, Surrey, the son of George and Sarah KING.

On 2nd April 1881, at St James Church in Croydon, John married Eliza HENWOOD, daughter of William and Harriet HENWOOD.  John is described as a labourer, living in Leslie Park Road and his father is also a Labourer.  Eliza is described as a spinster, living in St Saviours Road and her father is a farm labourer.  Witnesses are John and Martha EDWARDS, the bride's sister and brother-in-law.

John and Eliza had the following known children:

  • Mary Ann, b. 28th December 1881

  • George, b. about 1884

  • Edith, b. about 1886

  • Ellen, b. about 1889

See Figure 14 for John and Eliza's family in tree form.

In 1881 the family was living at 2 Chester Place, Leslie Park Road in Croydon as Table 13 shows.

Eliza went on to marry William CAFFYN and at the time of the 1901 census they were living at 2 Tait Road, Croydon as Table 14 shows.  This clears up the mystery of Eliza's birthplace which in 1881 is recorded as Breadfield, York, a place which does not exist. Eliza was born on 30th March 1861 in Bradfield, Berkshire, and died about 1942.
