THE PRIOR FAMILY OF CROYDON AND ADDINGTON

Chapter 6

William PRIOR (c.1786)

William PRIOR is estimated to have been born in about 1786, based on his age in the 1841 census (see Table 5), but not in Surrey.  When William moved to Addington is not known.

William was married to Hannah and the following known children (see tree diagram, Figure 13) were baptized in Addington's church of St Mary the Blessed Virgin:

  • William bap. 5th May 1813, bur. 12th Dec 1813.

  • Charlotte b. 19th Sep 1814, m. John PAISH.

  • William b. 5th June 1816.

  • Eliza b. 7th Jan 1818.

  • George b. 9th Oct 1819.

  • Elizabeth b. 31st Aug 1822.

  • James b. 29th Mar 1825.

William died of consumption at the age of 63 at 11a.m. on 20th December 1844 in Addington and there is a record of a burial at the church on 29th December 1844. His daughter Charlotte PAISH, of Spring Park Row, registered the death on the 21st.

Hannah was still alive and at the same address at the time of the 1851 census as Table 6 shows.  This table clears up a mystery generated by the 1841 census in that Emma is now recorded as an adopted daughter.  She appears to be the daughter of George and Sarah PIERCE and there is a burial record at Addington of a Sarah PEARCE when Emma was about 1 year old.  Note that Hannah was born a long way away in Bradford(-on-Avon) in Wiltshire.  Hannah died of 'old age' at the advanced age of 75 (the death certificate records 'decay of nature') on 13th August 1858 in Addington and there is a record of a burial at the church on 20th August 1858. Her daughter Charlotte PAISH registered the death on the 14th.
