THE PRIOR FAMILY OF CROYDON AND ADDINGTON

Chapter 5

William PRIOR (1816)

William PRIOR was born on 5th June 1816 at Addington, Surrey and baptized at the church on 12th June 1816, the second son of that name. The first William died at the age of 8 months in 1813.  William's parents were William and Hannah PRIOR.

On 29th July 1838 at St John the Baptist Church in Croydon William married Alice REEVES of Farnborough in Kent, daughter of Jeremiah REEVES and Ann LETTINGTON.  The marriage certificate describes them as 'of full age' and resident in Woodside in Croydon. They both made their marks instead of signing the register.  William is described as a ploughman and both the fathers are labourers.  Witnesses are William TIDY and Joseph Thomas RICE.

William and Alice had the following known children (all baptized at Addington church):

See Figure 12 for William and Alice's family in tree form.

In 1841 the family was living at Spring Park Lodge in Addington as table 2 shows.

In 1851 the family had moved to 17 Heathfield and acquired more children as table 3 shows.

In 1881 they had moved to 4 Haling Road in Croydon as table 4 shows.

William is believed to have died at the age of 64 and to have been buried at Addington on 8th December 1884 but this has yet to be confirmed.
