William Withers EWBANK The Late Rev. W. W. Ewbank, M.A. - On Saturday, September 20, the remains of the respected gentleman clergyman, whose lamented death we lately announced, were interred in the North-road Cemetery, At about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, the proceedings were commenced at St. Bartholomew's Church, Norwood, of which the deceased was incumbent. The hearse was met at the entrance of the church, which was crowded by the parishioners and a large number of the clergy and laity of Adelaide and its surroundings, by the Very Rev. Dean Russell, the Ven. Archdeacon Marryat, M.A., and Canon Farr, and the solemn and beautiful Church of England ante-burial service having been impressively read, Hymn 191 "Christ will gather in his own" from the Ancient and Modern Hymnal, was sung. The Dean then read the lesson, after which the choir sung Pope's "Ode" with touching pathos. The procession, a long line of vehicles was next formed, and proceeded to the cemetery, where the remainder of the service was conducted by the Archdeacon. At the grave besides the chief mourners, the widow and children of the departed, Messrs. A .B. Cooper, W. B. Carter, and Canon Coombs, we noticed amongst others, the Revs. L. W. Stanton, J. Pollitt, S. Green, F. Wright, H. M. Pollitt, R. Reid, T. Field, A. Honour, F. Williams, J. L. Smith, J. C. Haines and Dr. Duncan ; and Messrs. G. W. Hawkes, J. E. Moulden, C. T. H. Connor, Wm. Bartley, S. C. Pearson, A. L. Lloyd, Gooch and Howitt. There was a crowded congregation at St. Bartholomew's Sunday morning, September 21, when Archbishop Marryatt preached the funeral sermon. The Archdeacon, who as well as the congregation appeared to feel the loss deeply, preached from Galations vi 14, "But God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world hath been crucified unto me and I unto the world." In the course of his sermon he alluded to his long intimacy with the departed, of whose conscientious discharge of duty as a Christian minister he spoke highly. The preacher dwelt upon his earnestness of purpose, strict integrity, and unostentatious benevolence. In concluding he remarked that the deceased had never hesitated to express his convictions upon any religious point, and was firm yet kind in all dealings with his people ; and the Church had lost one whom it could ill spare. In the evening the church was again crowded, the very Rev. the Dean conducting the service. A most impressive and pathetic discourse, interrupted by the uncontrollable emotion of both the preacher and people, was based on the words, "The Father of mercies and the God of comfort." - 2. Cor. 1 chap, 2 ver. After tenderly dwelling on the subject of consolation under bereavement and the necessity for recognizing evening our affliction to the inestimable worth, entire self-abnegation, and sincere piety of the late pastor, and urged that the bright ensample of his life might stimulate those with whom he had been associated to higher aims and holier lives. The church was draped in deep mourning relieved by the pre white lilies and may. Several other Episcopalian churches were also clothed with emblems of sorrow, and many faces, and doubtless more hearts, plainly realized the fact that a noble soldier of the Cross and a faithfull friend had been taken from them to hi eternal rest.
