The General Court Baron of David Harridge Gentleman Lord of the said Manor held in and for the Said Manor on the Thirtieth day of October in the Twenty third year of the Reign of our sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of God of Great Britain ffrance and Scotland King Defender of the ffaith and so forth And in the year of our Lord one Thousand Seven hundred and Eighty two Before me John Griffith Gentleman Steward there.

The Homage { and } Sworn

At this Court the Homage present that since the last Court held for this Manor Joseph Smith late a copyhold Tenant of the said Manor dyed having first surrendered his copyhold Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments held of this Manor To the use of his will upon whose death a Heriot became due to the Lord of the said Manor which was compounded for at ffive pounds Now [at] this Court cometh John Smith of Bishop Stortford in the county of Hertford Gentleman and John Hoole of the East India House London Gentleman devisees [illegible] in the last will of the said Joseph Smith deceased by William Durrant their Attorney and produceth and showeth to the court the probate of the said last will and Testament of the said Joseph Smith duly executed dated the Twenty ninth day of August One Thousand seven hundred and Eighty one whereby the said Joseph Smith did give devise and bequeath (amongst other premises) All that his ffarm and Lands being part ffreehold and part copyhold situate in Little Stambridge and Great Stambridge near Rochford in the county of Essex and then in the occupation of the said William Durrant To hold the same with their appurtenances unto the said John Smith and John Hoole their Heirs and Assigns Upon Trust that the said John Smith and John Hoole their Heirs Executors and Administrators should and did pay unto the said Testators Sister Elizabeth Smith the Rents Issues and profits of the said several ffreehold copyhold and the Leasehold Estates therein mentioned from time to time during her natural life for her separate use notwithstanding any couverture And did will that the same or any part thereof should not be subject to the control Debts or Engagements of any Husband with whom she might happen to marry And that her receipt alone should from time to time be good discharges to the said Trustees for such Rents and Profits And the said Testator did thereby will and direct that the said Devise to his said Sister should be upon condition that she did not at anytime after his decease enter into or engage in any Trade or Business whatsoever And from and after the decease of the said Sister Elizabeth Or if after his decease she should enter into any concern in Trade Then upon such further Trusts as in the said will are mentioned Whereupon the said John Smith and John Hoole by their said Attorney humbly pray to be admitted Tenants to the said premises so devised to them (that is to say) To All that six acres of Land Customary and Heriotable called Sergeants otherwise Blackstones with a cottage thereupon sometime since built with the Appurtenances and holden of the said Manor by the annual Rent of Eight shillings and ffour pence To which premises the said Joseph Smith was admitted Tenant at a Court held for the said Manor the Twenty Second day of June One Thousand Seven hundred and ffifty one To which said John Smith and John Hoole by their said Attorney the Lord of the said Manor by his said Steward granteth and delivereth Seisin thereof by the Rod To have and to hold the said premises with their Appurtenances unto the said John Smith and John Hoole their Heirs and Assigns Upon the Trusts and according to the Tenor and Effect of the said will of the Lord by the Rod at the will of the Lord according to the Custom of the said Manor by the Rents Customs and Services therefore antiently due and of right accustomed And they gave to the Lord for ffines as appears in the Margin and (saving to the Lord all rights) they are admitted Tenants thereof in form aforesaid and their ffealty is respited.
