The Will of David Young Harridge of Little Stambridge Hall, 1821

In the Name of God Amen I David Young Harridge of Little Stambridge Hall in the County of Essex Yeoman being of sound mind memory and understanding do hereby make and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner following I desire to be buried at the discretion of my Wife and Executrix hereinafter named and that all my just Debts and Funeral Expenses be fully paid and satisfied Whereas my late Father David Harridge by his last Will and Testament gave and devised all that Messuage Tenement Outhouses Farm Land and Appurtenances I now occupy in Little Stambridge aforesaid to hold to me for the Term of my natural Life and after my decease be given and devised the same to my Eldest Son David Fulford Harridge and to his Heirs and Assigns for ever paying Heriot to my Daughter Sarah Ann the Sum of Five hundred pounds And also gave to my Sons Edward and Thomas his Oyster Business at their ages of twenty one years Now I do hereby desire and my Will is that as soon as convenient after my decease in case my Son David Fulford Harridge shall not have arrived at the age of Twenty one years that a Valuation shall be made of the Stock Cattle Crops Corn Hay Implements of Husbandry and all other the Goods and Effects in and upon the said Messuage or Tenement farm and premises or elsewhere situated And that my said Wife shall carry on the Business of the said Farm and also the Oyster Business until my said Sons David Fulford Edward and Thomas shall respectively attain the age of Twenty one years for the use and benefit of herself and Children provided she remains my Widow But in case my said Wife shall marry again before my said Son David Fulford attains his age of Twenty one years then I give and bequeath the said Stock Crops Cattle Corn Hay Implements of Husbandry and all other the said Goods and Effects in and upon the said Messuage or Tenement farm and premises or elsewhere to the Reverend Miles Moor[1] of Sutton in the County of Essex Clerk and Thomas Fulford of Hockley in the said County Yeoman In Trust nevertheless that they the said Miles Moor and Thomas Fulford or the Survivor of them shall carry on the said Farm and Business and also the Oyster Business in their names and under their direction until my said Son David Fulford shall attain the age of Twenty one years and after he shall have attained that age then I desire that the said Stock Crops Cattle Corn Hay Implements of Husbandry and all other my said Goods and Effects shall be sold and disposed of to the best advantage and the produce thereof laid out and invested in Government or other good Securities in their joint names And I desire that my said Wife Ann Harridge may take and receive the Interest Dividends and Produce thereof for and during the Term of her natural Life (provided she continues unmarried) but in case my said Wife shall marry again then In Trust to stand possessed thereof and pay and apply the said Interest Dividends and produce thereof to her for her own sole and separate use and benefit without the control or interference of her Husband preserving nevertheless to my said Trustees Miles Moore and Thomas Fulford a power to pay thereout such Sums as they may deem necessary for the placing out and advancement of my younger Children And after the decease of my said Wife then I give and bequeath the Principal Money so invested in the said Government or other Secutiries and all other my Estate and Effects that I may die possessed of not otherwise herein disposed of to my said Trustees and Executors and the Survivors of them In Trust nevertheless to pay and divide the same amongst all my Children (except my Eldest Son) in equal shares and proportions after deducting the amount of what my Daughter Sarah Ann and my Sons Edward and Thomas are entitled to under their Grandfathers Will from their shares it being my Will and intention that my younger Children shall be provided for equally under my Will as my said Children Sarah Ann Thomas and Edward are entitled to both under my Will and their Grandfathers Will And I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said Wife Ann Harridge the said Miles Moor and Thomas Fulford Executrix and Executors of this my Will And I give to each of my said Executors Miles Moor and Thomas Fulford Fifty pounds for their Trouble in executing this my Will and hereby revoking all other Wills by me made I hereby declare this to be my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this fourteenth day of November in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and ten

Proved on the thirtieth day of July in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and twenty one before The Reverend John Giffard Ward Clerk Surrogate etc by the Oaths of Ann Harridge the Widow and Thomas Fulford two of the Executors to whom Administration etc was granted they being first Sworn duly to administer power being reserved of making the like Grant to the Reverend Miles Moor the other Executor when he shall lawfully apply for the same.
