George Frederick GILLAM (1888-1961)

George Frederick GILLAM was born on 29th January 1888 at 133 Gloucester Road, Croydon, Surrey, the seventh child of William and Eliza GILLAM.

On 30th March 1908 he married Margaret WHITE at St Albans Church, Norwood, Surrey.  See the photos below and also Figure 16.

George and Margaret had 17 known children (see Figure 13) as follows:

  • Arthur, b. 1922, d. 1994
  • Robert, b. 1924, d. 1999
  • Louise, b. 1925, d. 1966
  • George, b. 1927
  • Philip, b. 1928, d. 2006
  • Peter, b. 1930, d. 1986
  • Joan, b. 1st January 1932, d. 31st May 1988 (Joan married Leslie NIXON. See Leslie's family)

George (for reasons unknown he was called 'Blucher') ran market stalls selling fruit and vegetables in Croydon and when he died on 23rd September 1961 at Onslow Road the market in Surrey Street was closed for the day so that the hearse could drive through. Details of this were apparently in the Croydon Advertiser at the time.
